Personal Stories

The success of Garden Partners' work is reflected in the stories of those we've touched.

Steve had given up Hope

When Garden Partners first met Steve he preferred to sit by himself in his room. Born with cerebral palsy, Steve, now in his 40s, is in long-term care. He had given up hope stating, “I can’t walk so I’d rather be dead.

Then he began to quietly watch Garden Partners’ activities from the sidelines. After awhile he joined in, began interacting with others and asking gardening questions of our staff.

That spring Steve began going outdoors. He seemed interested in planting, so we encouraged him to plant carrot seeds. He cared for the carrots while they grew, and at harvest time was excited and proud to share them with everyone.

Today, Steve is often ready and waiting for the gardening session to begin. He is creative, engaged in activities, and willing to try most anything. He's not as anxious and depressed, and in general his outlook is more positive.

Carol had a Stroke

The effects of Carol’s stroke changed her physical ability, but didn't break her spirit. She is a regular at Garden Partners' weekly sessions, eager to learn about plants and natural materials. Carol is usually the first to volunteer to try something new. She enjoys working with others and loves to garden outdoors.
